/ / skima who?

For those not already familiar with Skima Studios, it started with the idea that great design and terrific client service equals a successful business.

Our Art / Smart philosophy allows each member of the skima staff to focus on their individual strengths: whether it's creative and effective graphic design in either print or web, custom application development or dependable, flexible attention to detail, clients always get the best of both worlds.

After much hard work and deliberation, we are proud to introduce to the world skima studios version 5! Since our inception in 2005, the studios have incurred quite an unusual problem in todays economy: rapid expansion and growth. That's why version 5 is designed to assist our growth in ways it's predecessors never imagined it would need to do.

While the view is new, the philosophy always remains the same. It's the same commitment to quality design and customer service that keeps us moving towards the next version.

Imaging

Before any graphic elements may be applied to a design, the graphic elements must be originated by means of visual art skills. These graphics are often (but not always) developed by a graphic designer.

Visual arts include works which are primarily visual in nature using anything from traditional media, to photography or computer generated art. Graphic design principles may be applied to each graphic art element individually as well as to the final composition.

Page Layout

Page layout is the part of graphic design that deals in the arrangement and style treatment of elements (content) on a page. Beginning from early illuminated pages in hand-copied books of the Middle Ages and proceeding down to intricate modern magazine and catalog layouts, proper page design has long been a consideration in printed material. With print media, elements usually consist of type (text), images (pictures), and occasionally place-holder graphics for elements that are not printed with ink such as die/laser cutting, foil stamping or blind embossing.

Brand Managment

A brand is an identifiable entity that makes some specific promise of value. Branding is used to create emotional attachment to products and companies. Branding efforts create a feeling of involvement, a sense of higher quality, and an aura of intangible qualities that surround the brand name, mark, or symbol.

Successful branding efforts build strategic awareness where people not only recognize your brand, but they also understand the distinctive qualities that make it better than the competition. Branding is more important today than ever due to ever-increasing advertising clutter, media fragmentation, the commoditization of products, and the seemingly limitless choices we are offered in just about every product category.

As marketers, we need to work hard to ensure that we are offering our customers strong brands that are clearly differentiated and that offer clear, real value and unique benefits. The need for branding has never been greater.

Illustrations

Vector graphics is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and shapes or polygons, which are all based on mathematical equations, to represent images in computer graphics.

EPS formats are complementary to raster graphics, which is the representation of images as an array of pixels, similar to what is used in photographic images. There are instances when working with vector tools and formats is best practice, and instances when working with raster tools and formats is best practice. There are times when both formats come together. An understanding of the advantages and limitations of each technology and the relationship between them is most likely to result in efficient and effective use of tools.

Print Mechanicals

Every printer has mechanical specifications that must be met in order for them to get your design onto the printed page. If you’re printing your own publication of course you can have a lot of control over this, but in magazine ads for instance you have to adhere to their standards.

There may be other things to take into account, but I’ll list some typical major ones. I based this upon requirements of an international magazine I prepare work for frequently.

Web Design

Graphic designers are often involved in interface design, such as web design and software design when end user interactivity is a design consideration of the layout or interface. Combining visual communication skills with the interactive communication skills of user interaction and online branding, graphic designers often work with software developers and web developers to create both the look and feel of a web site or software application and enhance the interactive experience of the user or web site visitor.

/ / who's behind it all.

Shawn Dunn

Shawn Dunn
In 1995, Shawn was handed an outdated IBM PS/1, a copy of Photoshop LE and given the mandate to design an instructional manual for a bartender school. When he pointed out
that he was in no way qualified to take on such a project, the owner simply responded
"You'll figure it out."

As it turns out, they were right. Within less than a year he was tasked with creating a monthly boating safety publication for the Iroquois Power Squadron and started him off on a path that continues on to this day.

Over 20 years and 500 clients later, Shawn continues to work in the Rochester area, most notably as the Art Director of Printed Deals Magazine that reaching 1.2 million homes a year. More active people may recognize his work either through Hotshot Indoor Volleyball Club or the sprawling phenomenon that is the Kickball League of Rochester.

While his design schedule has been quite busy for the last few years, he always looks forward to taking on new challenges both on a computer desktop and in life.

"Life is either a great adventure or nothing."

- Helen Keller
